Documents Collection Adds John André
We express our gratitude to Dan Silva for sharing choice entries from Captain John André's journal, providing another British perspective on the reduction of Fort Mifflin. Captain André details the ill-fated assault on Philadelphia by the American frigate Delaware; inventories the British arsenal assembled on Province Island; and reports on the destruction of the Royal Navy frigate Augusta. Captain John André was an up-and-coming British officer who would be promoted to Major in 1778, and in that same year would organize the infamous Mischianza, celebrating the leadership of General Howe. In 1779, Major André became Adjutant-General of the British Army in America. And in 1780, André was hanged as a spy after conspiring with Benedict Arnold to surrender West Point to the British.
