Many Thanks from the Grand Olde Lady of the Delaware.

I would like to thank all of you that took part in volunteering today at Fort Mifflin. Twenty volunteers from all walks of life joined us today to scrape and prime all windows on the ground floors of the Officer’s Quarters, Soldier’s Barracks and the Commissary. The floors were swept and windows cleaned throughout along with waterproofing the picnic tables and the stairs to the second level of the Soldier’s Barracks. The blacksmith shop even had a layer of two of dirt and grime removed. Debris was pulled from the moat and even the grass was cut. You all did yourselves proud in attempting to spruce up a grand old lady called Fort Mifflin. Many thanks from myself, members of the staff and the Fort Mifflin on the Delaware.

As soon as we can get another date scheduled I will let you all know.

It is people that make things happen. People standing together with a common thought or goal. Look what happened in 1776, people stood together for the goal of independency from a mother country. It was those people that also sustained and nurtured, at the time, Fort Mudd on Mud Island so that it was able to do the job it was destined for. With the help of several hundred men this Fort did the job of delaying the British fleet. This delay was enough to have General Washington stand face to face against General Howe at Whitemarsh in December and then safely move his army to the Valley Forge for the winter encampment. The United States Army rebuilt Fort Mudd and she was renamed Fort Mifflin. Fort Mifflin served her country from her infancy in 1771, the toddler years in 1777, and onward through 5 major conflicts in our nation's history. Again it will be people that will help her shine as our forefathers helped build and support her for her many years. But this time it needs to come from the people, you and me.

So please watch this space, first for the photos of those that helped this weekend and then for future dates. Were we will gather to continue help the Grande Olde Lady of the Delaware shine and tell her story of growth, construction, glory and defeat. Once again to all that made it and even to those who could not, but supported us through facebook and myspace, a hearty thank you.
