July 4th Weekend at Fort Mifflin

Fort Mifflin is open to the public from 10 until 4 on July 3rd and July 4th.

On July 3rd celebrate the annual FREEDOM BLAST activities as we kick off the weekend. Re-enactors and Living historians will gather at the Fort to blast off the weekend with demonstrations and activities throughout the day. The USS BULKELEY will be passing the Fort around noon on that day as she heads to port at Penn's Landing. As she passes the Fort we will fire a salute to honor her and the men & women that serve her.

We will also have a reading of the "Declaration of Independence" along with musket drills for the children.

Then on July 4th, join us and the Marine Corps League Chester County Detachment #286 at 1:00pm. At that time the Marine Corps League and Auxiliary will lay a wreath to honor those unsung heroes who participated in the blockade of the Delaware River during October and November of 1777. This ceremony will also emphasize the Marine Corps participation in that action on the Delaware River. We honor the hallowed ground of Fort Mifflin along with the 25,000 casualties of the American War for Independence. The battle at Fort Mifflin was the highlight of the defense of the Delaware and the League along with many others believe it was one of the most important battles of that war.

The ceremony will conclude with a tour of the 1798 constructed Fort Mifflin as it became part of the First Coastal Defense System under President John Adams. We state this because the fortification from 1777 was totally destroyed by the British Army & Navy and all wooden remains were burned by the commander and 40 volunteers as they evacuated the Fort on November 15, 1777 leaving the Flag flying overhead.

Come to Fort Mifflin and take part in an awe inspiring ceremony to honor all our heroes from then and now.
